It seems like Windsong is safer at sea! Since we docked, life has certainly been interesting.
To start with, a short trip to the nearest island ended up with Craig visiting the local hospital for 7 stitches after a nasty encounter with barnacles while diving to check the hull.
On return to Salvador, much celebrating was on hand as Gilly B and Devonvale arrived within an hour of each other. I managed to cause an international incident by accidentally and unwittingly setting off the EPIRB on Devonvale while raiding JJ's sweets locker! An EPIRB is a device that is only set off in dire emergency; it gives the exact position of the boat and alerts the US Coast Guard. They in turn, contacted JJ's daughter in Cape Town, and she then phoned her dad who caught the culprit, red-handed, with fingers in the cookie jar!
Meanwhile back in the race office: Suidoos has lost her shot at winning on handicap. She should have finished 3 hours ago, and still has 300-odd miles to go. Therefore, with no other competitors left in the running, Windsong has won.
Windsong therefore joins an elite group of boats who have won both line honours (mono-hull) and the South Atlantic Trophy (handicap). 'Stormy' achieved this in 1973, and 'Zephyrus' in 2001.
